George W. Woodworth
April 29, 1863 – December 13, 1944
George W. Woodworth was a Wisconsin farmer and poet, and the great-grandfather of this edition’s editor, Mark G. Woodworth. His life was rooted in the family farm near Mequon and Cedarburg in Ozaukee County.
Alongside his work in agriculture, he wrote about faith, the natural world, daily work, and the concerns of his community and times. His poetry appeared in local publications and was gathered in Select Poems, published in 1924.
His early poem A Juvenile Prayer, dated January 1, 1881, was later chosen by his family for inscription on his tombstone.
